I was born in Brittany (France) and have been living since 1999 in Ireland, a country I love. I am currently writing a PhD thesis on Margaret Atwood’s short stories, while also earning a living as a waitress and trying to maintain a social life.
As the name of this blog suggests it is about life: thoughts about life in general and about my life in particular, although not in a very personal way. Books and literature occupy an important place in my life, therefore I often talk about literature and regularly do book reviews. However, this is not a book blog per se as I also like to discuss other topics.
I enjoy reading comments and try to acknowledge them and engage in discussion with my readers, but time is sometimes a constaint so don’t hold a grudge against me if I don’t always answer…

Dear Em,
I am one of the three people who inadvertently received one of your World Book Night books. The Margaret Atwood novel, the Blind Assassin was sent to our shop McCarthy News, and my husband thought it was like the World Book Day books that come in (to be sold at reduced price of a euro). Of course, the distributors should have issued instructions to him, but they hadn’t. He gave me one, and our two daughters one each to give to their teachers. (Usually, he gives each child in their class one of the free small editions of children’s publications).
Anyway, I know you wanted feedback, but I have passed the book on to the next reader as requested, and have been 3 months delayed in writing this review! (Sorry). So, I read it while on holiday in June and what a revelation! I was completely captivated by her writing and found it was one of those books you don’t want to put down, but you make yourself, because you also want it to last. However, for me, it wasn’t without its faults. I’m not a fan of science fiction, and although Atwood herself insists it’s actually ‘speculative fiction’, to me it amounts to the same thing. While i enjoyed the chronological fragmentation, I did sometimes feel the Blind Assassin novel within a novel within a novel was rather extraneous, – or at the very least, an unnecessary diversion. I picked up very early that it was Iris and not Laura who was having the affair, but this did not diminish my enjoyment of the plot development in any way. And I loved her simple style and colourful description. I see by your site you’re doing a PhD so maybe you could recommend another of her novels I might enjoy.
Best Wishes,
Susan

Hi Susan,
Sorry it took me so long to get back to you and thanks a lot for giving your feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
From what you say, I would recommend to read Alias Grace. You might also find a certain connection as the character is an Irish emigrant and Atwood actually started writing it while in West Cork.
She has just published a book of lectures on science fiction. I haven’t read it yet, but I’m most curious about it…
Best,
Em

Hey Parrish!
How are you?
Let’s just say that I have been a little overwhelmed by life; in a good way. I’ve never been one who gets bored, but at the moment, I don’r even have time for extraneous activities. I’ll get back to blogging on here, at some stage…
I doubt I’ll ever be able to catch up on all the posts that are kept on my reader though….

Hey Parrish! How are things? I’ve been away from this blog and a lot of things for a while. Who knows, it might come alive again soon?!
